Marat was editing this edition of his L'Ami du Peuple when Charlotte Corday, thinking she was saving her beloved France by silencing the poisonous Jean-Paul Marat, plunged a knife into his chest. Thus the blood stains. I've read that the original is in Museé Carnavalet, my favorite Paris museum, which is full of incredible pieces of history. I couldn't find it there, though...
