The Coronation of Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David

To prevent the detail from getting even less clear than this, the painting has been cropped. Only the center is shown. The painting in the Louvre is 30' x 16'. David painted himself into the gallery. He also included Napoleon's mother (top left in chair) who refused to attend in protest to a family squabble between Napoleon and his brothers. Napoleon is shown preparing to place the crown on Josephine's head.

The first painting I ever saw at the Louvre and someone had to pull me away or I might have spent the day admiring it. I wish I were a painter of those times, at least I'd learn the ways of painting like they did in those times...LOVE IT!!!
I'm afraid evolution has robbed human beings of the ability to paint like David. Or maybe global warming It's just unnatural! Remember the detail in the Coronation? The different expressions on each face?

I keep going back to your blog to see that picture among others. I cannot imagine painting those details. How long did it take I wonder? Going back to painting class next week!!! Yeah!!!

Josephine did not have much time for the many sittings David required from her.

She just sat for a few hours, until he could get a skecht of her, kneeling.

After that,it was his beautiful daughter who posed for him- so that it is Mlle. David´s picture, not Josephine´s.

I saw the very unflattering skecht David made of Josephine- on it she wrote "Give it to my son Eugene"

Your blog is enchanting. Thank you so much!
La Jeune Captive... thank you so much for your comment. That information is new to me and makes the painting even more interesting. I hope you'll come back and share some more.
And, thanks for the kind words about the blog, La Jeune Captive. I've not posted on it in months and your little encouragement has inspired me to take it up again.
